Buran Ghati

Buran Ghati Trek is one of the most famous and beautiful crossover treks i.e. a trek with a different starting and ending point. The trek starts from Janglik which is situated about 150 Km. from the summer capital of Himachal Pradesh - Shimla and ends at a village called Barua.

The trek will take you through dark forests and extensive Dayara meadows. Buran Ghati Trek is a 25 Km long trek and takes about 5 days to complete (2 additional days for driving to and from the trek location). 

This moderate difficulty trek will take you to a high altitude of 15,000 ft. at Buran Ghati Pass. Summer season from mid May to early July & Autumn season from mid September to mid October are the best time to visit the trek.

 

Short Itinerary

Day 1

Janglik to Dayara Thatch

The first day of the trek starts with a 4 Km hike from Janglik village to Dayara Thatch. It will take around 5 hours to complete and will be a mix of gradual ascents & descents. You will find yourself crossing wooden farmhouses, dense pine, oak & deodar forests and across open meadows which will take you to an altitude of 11,075 ft. above sea level. Overnight stay will be in camps at Dayara meadows.

Day 2

Dayara Thatch to Litham

After having breakfast & morning tea, we will spend some time exploring the Dayara Thatcha as today’s hike is a short one of about 3 Km and will take us about 3 - 4 hours to reach Litham located at an height of 11,800 ft. The trail is a steady gradual ascent followed by a descent through dense forest. Overnight stay will be at Litham campsite.

Day 3

Acclimatization day, visit to Chandranahan lake

Today we will be visiting the Chandranahan lake located at 3 Km. hike from Litham campsite. We will start early in the morning as the trail is a mix of steep ascents and descents. Chandranahan is a beautiful group of 7 lakes although you will only be able to see 3. After spending some time admiring the beauty of the lakes, we will return back to Litham campsite for the rest of the day.

Day 4

Litham to Dhunda

After breakfast, we will start climbing towards Dunda. It is a 4-hour hike on a gradual/steep ascending trail which will take us to an altitude of 13,000 ft. At this point, you will be able to catch a clear glimpse of Dhauladhar Range. Climbing further towards Dhauna you will get a clear view of Buran Ghati once you reach there. This will be our camping site for tonight.

Day 5

Dhunda to Munirang via Buran Ghati

The most awaited and the longest day of the trek has finally arrived. We will be making our way from Dhunda to Munirang via Buran Ghati. The trail will take us to a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft and we will be trekking for 10 -11 hour and cover a distance of 7 Km. 

Today’s trail is a mix of steep ascents and descents. You will find yourself walking on narrow ledges, so watch your step carefully. Overnight stay at Munirang River Camp.

Day 6

Munirang to Barua Village

Last day of the trek we will descend to the Barua Village which is a beautiful treat.

 

Trekking Tips

  • Plan your trek with a reputed trekking company as it will allow you to have a hassle-free trekking experience.
  • Trekking gear can be rented, but there might be a shortage during the peak season in winters so plan accordingly.
  • Carry an insulated water bottle so that you can have access to hot water throughout the year.
  • Don’t pack heavily for the trek, only carry necessary items and clothes (2-3 layers of light clothing)

What to Carry on Buran Ghati Trek?

This is a brief list of things that you should carry on the trek to make the experience more memorable and much more comfortable - 

  • Woollen clothes like sweaters, thermals, pairs of gloves, caps, mufflers, socks.
  • Heavy and complete three to five clothing layers are minimal during Winters as the weather might get unpredictable. Light woolen is enough for summer trips.
  • Windproof jacket
  • Hiking shoes, Snow boots, sandals or slippers
  • Walking stick or a trekking pole
  • Accessories like sunglasses with UV protection, sunscreen lotions, lip balm, headlamp, torch with extra batteries.
  • Toiletries: Sanitizer, tissues, liquid soaps, paste and toothbrush
  • Medicines: Diamox for altitude sickness, essential medicines for headache, stomach upset, and regular medication if you are taking any, band-aids, volini spray, and anything else.
  • Power bank
  • Raincoat, extra shirts/t-shirts, and trekking pants
  • Identity card and photocopies.
  • Insulated water bottle
  • Woollen fleece jackets
  • Few poly bags to keep any wet clothes. 
  • Energy bars, biscuits, chocolates, dry fruits to munch, and ORS or Glucose to not drain energy.
  • Camera with extra memory cards, batteries, chargers.

If you are travelling with a trekking company, some of these things might be included in your package. Make sure to ask them what all equipment and extras they will provide you during the trek.
